Moving cleanout guide

A Garage and Basement Cleanout Plan Before Moving

A room-by-room method for separating keepsakes, move supplies, removals and hazardous materials.

Start in the garage and basement before the main living areas are packed. Those spaces hold the tools, documents, seasonal items and hazardous materials that are easiest to overlook and hardest to sort on moving day.

Work in small zones

Choose one shelf, wall or six-foot floor area. Make four destinations: move, remove, hazardous or special handling, and undecided. Finish that zone before opening another group of boxes.

Pull out the items that control the move

Keep hand tools, chargers, cleaning supplies, keys and the first-night box accessible. Move titles, tax papers, medical records, photos and valuables into a closed area that is never part of the removal zone.

Separate hazards early

Fuel, oil, paint, pool chemicals, pesticides, batteries, propane cylinders and unknown containers should not enter a general cleanout pile. Use the current county or municipal program for each material.

Check the carry route

Basement stairs need clear tread space, stable lighting and enough room at the top and bottom to turn. In a garage, keep the loading lane separate from the items that are still moving with you.

Next step

Use the checklist to make the removal list concrete, then review the companion Downsizing Cleanout page before calling with the address and access notes.

Turn the checklist into a removal plan.

Call with the address, item list, access details and preferred timing. The estimate should confirm scope before work begins.
